New center supports companies with innovative automations

Nov 29, 2024 | Articles, cases, News from the city of Odense, Robotics and Drones

The Center for Large Structure Production (LSP), located at Odense Port, is the world’s first robotics center dedicated to the production of large structures. The center focuses on automation solutions by introducing digital and robotics technologies in traditionally manual industries such as maritime, construction, and energy. These labour-intensive sectors urgently need to reduce the time from project idea to production to meet climate and energy goals. Automation contributes to sustainability and makes production more efficient.

Introducing robotics technologies in manual industries

The goal is to have robots drive the green transition. The new center for LSP hereby leverages Odense’s status as one of the world’s leading robotics cities, further advancing solutions to tackle challenges across industries and enabling the future of automation.

Odense Port is the perfect place for this new robotics research center – many relevant partners such as Fayard, CS Wind Offshore and Vestas (and some 100+ more) have their operations here, and the location of “Lindø” is where the Danish robotics community started many years ago.

Christian Schlette

Professor, Dr. -Ing, Head of LSP

Although the center will not be fully completed until 2025, the LSP center is already operating at Odense Port as a temporary facility. With the new building, they will install and commission their main equipment—a large robotic workspace measuring 30x20x10 meters. This facility enables research in areas that are expensive to work with and automate because it happens on such a large scale.

Eager to share its expertise and knowledge

The University of Southern Denmark (SDU) owns and runs the LSP center and has raised around 425 million DKK for the project.

As a world leader in robotics research, SDU has gained knowledge and expertise to help companies make the green transition more affordable, increase productivity, and create more and safer jobs in heavy industries through robots and automation.

The demand for our research and services is accelerating. Odense is excellent in supporting the “triple helix” of public bodies, companies and knowledge institutions working together. In addition, of course also our SDU students and from SDU’s long-standing R&D for the local automation community, are unique advantages to our mission in terms of staffing and networks.”

Christian Schlette

Professor, Dr. -Ing,, Head of LSP

The LSP center provides room to share innovative solutions and expertise with companies working on large and complex constructions. For example, the green transition requires the installation of more wind turbines in Denmark to meet the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 70% by 2030. Robotics solutions are crucial to meeting sustainability requirements and the center for LSP plays an important role as a key catalyst.

“Having the opportunity to utilize such unique facilities here in Odense is truly one-of-a-kind and a clear competitive advantage. The center once again put Odense on the global map of robotics and give companies a unique opportunity to discover the world’s next automation solutions with robotics technology.”

Innovative solutions for automation

One of the companies collaborating with LSP is Odense-based Inrotech. They design and manufacture automated welding solutions for shipbuilding, offshore, renewables, and heavy industries.

“The collaboration with LSP brings great value to Inrotech, as it enhances our ability to develop innovative solutions for automating large constructions. Being located in Odense allows us to work closely and flexibly, sharing knowledge quickly and effectively.

Carl Erik Skjølstrup

Naval Architect, Inrotech

Inrotech is one of the companies benefitting from the knowledge environment provided by the center for LSP. Their collaboration with LSP has enabled them to develop a new welding robot that speeds up and makes wind turbine foundation production more cost-effective.

“The LSP project creates a sort of umbrella collaboration, which transforms our interactions with the users of our technology based at Odense Port into partnerships rather than simple customer-supplier relationships.”

Carl Erik Skjølstrup

Naval Architect, Inrotech

A part of the strong ecosystem in Odense

As part of SDU, LSP ensures its partners access to cutting-edge research and a steady pipeline of highly qualified talent. Other local partners, such as Odense Robotics, are also crucial collaborators for companies like Inrotech. The ecosystem that companies like Inrotech are part of in Odense thus provides invaluable co-innovation opportunities, keeping them at the forefront of technological advancements.

LSP is a game-changer, bringing the power of automation and robotics to new domains like shipbuilding and wind energy. The center is a bold step towards transforming these sectors with cutting-edge innovation and sustainable solutions that can increase competitiveness and tackle global challenges such as labour shortages. The center is also a great example of how companies, the university, and organisations like Odense Robotics collaborate to realize a common ambition: to improve the world with Danish robotics.”

Søren Elmer Kristensen

CEO, Odense Robotics, Denmark's national robotics cluster.

The establishment of LSP at the port will bring significant value to Odense’s already strong ecosystem in robotics and automation. In the future, Odense will also play a key role when large-scale structures need to be developed and built. This vision will come to life next year when LSP’s new facility is completed.
